Rules of the Pond

Background

These guidelines exist to help all of us enjoy Perkins Pond safely and responsibly. By following them, we’re doing our part to protect the pond, respect our neighbors, and ensure this special place remains healthy and welcoming for everyone.

Because many people enjoy Perkins Pond each season, we ask cabin owners to display these guidelines for guests and renters. Making the rules visible helps ensure everyone is on the same page and contributes to a respectful, well-cared-for pond.

The Rules

  • Maintain “No Wake” speeds within 150 feet of the shoreline, docks, rafts, other boats, and swimmers. A “No Wake” speed is approximately 6 mph and helps keep everyone safe.

  • Power boats travel clockwise around Perkins Pond. Following a shared direction reduces congestion and improves safety on the water.

  • Watch for rocks. For safe navigation, stay east and north of black-and-white markers, and west and south of red-and-white markers.

  • Do not feed ducks or geese. Feeding wildlife can negatively affect both bird health and pond water quality.

  • Avoid using lawn fertilizers. Fertilizers introduce phosphorus into the pond, which can trigger excessive plant growth, clog waterways, and degrade water quality.

  • Be mindful of noise. Sound travels easily across the pond, and persistent barking dogs can disrupt the peaceful character of summer days.

  • Reduce nighttime lighting. As a courtesy to neighbors across the pond, please turn off exterior lights facing the water when they are not needed.

  • Wash your boat. If your boat has been used in other bodies of water, please wash it thoroughly before launching into Perkins Pond. This simple step helps prevent the introduction of invasive species and is especially important for renters who may be boating in multiple locations. More information here.
